Trekking Insurance - Topsail Insurance (2024)

Trekking is quickly becoming one of most popular sports, appealing to both travellers wanting to see more of a destination and those who enjoy the thrills of pushing themselves.

Why Should You Choose Our Trekking Insurance?

  • £10,000,000 Million Medical Expenses Cover
  • Up to £50,000 Search and Rescue Cover
  • Up to £1,000 for Activity / Sports Equipment
  • Cover up to 9,000 Metres
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance

At Topsail we want you to have peace of mind when you’re exploring what the world has to offer. Our very own Director Nigel Hawkes undertook a trip to Everest base camp in March 2024 and has shared his experience:

“Although this was very much a trip I wanted to do on my own, it was important to both me and peace of mind for my family to recognise that a normal package travel insurance product often excludes this sort of high altitude trekking. This was my first higher altitude trek and whilst I prepared and trained thoroughly, the tour company take great care to explain potential pitfalls, common injuries and illnesses, including altitude sickness which if severe can mean that you need assistance quickly. If things go wrong the only way down from Everest base camp is by helicopter so it’s vital to ensure you have specialised cover. I didn’t want to be half way into my trip up Mount Everest and find my insurance company won’t help. I saw first-hand a lady that fell ill due to altitude sickness and didn’t have helicopter cover. She was carried down on the back of a donkey at some cost and considerable discomfort!!”

At Topsail Insurance, we believe that having the right trekking insurance is absolutely essential. It covers you for medical and repatriation expenses, along with all the normal, unexpected hiccups that can unfortunately go wrong on any holiday. Trekking by nature can be in remote or risky locations, so we have a specialist available at all times, to assist with issues, day, or night.

Our trekking insurance cover includes search and rescue coverage, if needed on medical grounds and is authorised by the insurance company’s Medical Emergency Assistance Service.

We can even cover mountaineering / trekking up to up to 9,000 metres for the most adventurous of you.

Typically Topsail Insurance can offer you cover for:

  • Everest base camp trekking insurance
  • Inca Trail and the Lares Trek in Peru
  • Mera Peak, high up in the Himalayas (6,476 metres)
  • Kilimanjaro
  • Machu Picchu
  • Mont Blanc

Some tips from our explorer Nigel:

Here are some tips I picked up that may help a first timer or provide a valuable refresher if you’re trekking again after a long break:

  1. Research any jabs or medications that you may need well in advance
  2. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, be sure to contact your Travel Insurance provider well in advance as any insurance policy may take a little longer to put in place
  3. If you’re not going on an organised group trek, make sure you share your plan with a trusted friend
  4. If you prefer to use an organised trekking company there’s a huge array of choice. Do your research and look at forums for the particular trip you are interested in
  5. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Don’t be afraid to ask others what to pack, but pack light. Remember, whatever you take you’re going to have to carry
  6. Essential medications and basic first aid kit is a must. Remember you won’t be able to pop to a pharmacy
  7. Altitude sickness - get to know the signs. Altitude sickness can affect even the youngest and fittest of us all
  8. Ensure you have the right kit - you don’t need to spend a fortune, but you must have suitable trekking gear and boots for the conditions and weather you are likely to encounter.

At Topsail Insurance we also have policies that will cover lower altitudes including walking up to an altitude not exceeding 3,000 metres (9,842 feet). This will cover most general walking holidays.

We’d be delighted to help with your Trekking Insurance requirements.
