2:41pm – 1500m Final –Sophie O'Sullivan

EUGENE, Ore. – This one cemented a legacy. Two years ago at Hayward Field, Joe Waskom pulled off a stunning win in the NCAA 1,500-meter final that also featured teammates Luke Houser and Nathan Green. At the time it was UW's first men's national title on the track since 2007.

Back at Hayward Field tonight, in the NCAA Outdoor Championship 1,500-meter final that again included Houser and Green, Waskom reclaimed his crown in thrilling fashion in his final race as a Dawg in a time of 3:39.48. And now that trio of UW men have combined for the past five NCAA titles in the 1,500-meters and the mile, an unprecedented streak of mid-distance dominance.

The 10 points from Waskom combined with points scored on Wednesday from Chandler Ault in the javelin and Max Manson in the pole vault to give the UW men's team a 15th-place NCAA finish, scoring 18.2 points. It's UW's third-straight top-15 finish, something that hadn't happened since 1977-79.

What Waskom started in 2022 continued on with Luke Houser winning the 2023 indoor mile national title, then Green captured the 2023 outdoor 1,500m title (with Waskom as runner-up). A fourth-straight win came from Houser as he repeated his mile victory in March of 2024. And Waskom brings it full circle with the fifth-straight victory for Washington, and the third-straight 1,500-meter title outdoors. Villanova was the last team to win three-straight outdoor 1,500m titles, from 1979-81.

"I came into this program five years ago not knowing what to expect," said Waskom, the Snoqualmie, Wash. product. "Leaving here with two titles and making a Worlds team is great but what I feel like I'm going to remember the most is the bonds I made with my teammates and my coaches and lifelong friends and memories. The hardships of training in the rain and blood, sweat, and tears with the boys."

Waskom said he wanted to take the lead going into the final lap, but he was forced to wait longer to make his move. With 200-meters to go he was sitting in seventh-place, but swung himself out wide around the final turn, into fifth-place, and he had a clear view of the four runners ahead of him as he gained ground on them from out in lane three.

Back in 2022, Waskom had powered to the lead on the backstretch and held it the whole way. This time he fought and dug and over the final few meters he pulled past the field, glancing to his left near the line and seeing that he had the edge over Oregon's Elliott Cook on the inside. Waskom leaned across the line and raised his arm into the air victorious in a time of 3:39.48, less than a tenth of a second ahead of Cook, spoiling the home crowd's Oregon hopes.

"My stomach was hurting and I looked to my left and I knew I was gaining on those guys, and honestly I was getting prepped to dive. I crossed the finish line and I was lucky to know I won it, but the boys took it to the line and made me fight for it, and made me lose my lunch."

"This is my last race as a Dawg, and my boys Nathan and Luke have been there through it all ... I could not be more grateful for my teammates and my coaches." ????#GoHuskies x #NCAATF pic.twitter.com/83UKw6YcrR

The top-10 men were remarkably close as Green finished 10th overall but was just 1.5 seconds behind Waskom's winning time, in 3:40.98. Houser held the lead halfway through the race but he ran out of gas on the final lap and finished 12th overall. It was Houser's seventh All-America honor and a sixth for Green. Houser also finishes his storied UW career tonight with two NCAA titles, while Green will be back next year to chase a second title for himself.

The Huskies have not come into the last three NCAA Outdoor meets with nation-leading times, but have come away with the win each time.

"People always love fast times," said Waskom. "It's what gets media attention. But in our reality we don't really care much for all that publicity stuff. We care about getting this title today. Our prep was for any single race plan … if it was 3:34 today we all could have done it, if it was 3:55, we were ready for anything, and I think that's what makes us go five in a row. We were ready for anything on this day."

For Head Coach Andy Powell, he has now incredibly coached 50% of the NCAA 1,500-meter Champions over the past 14 years. Powell coached four men to victories in his time at Oregon in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, and he has now coached three-straight wins from the Huskies.

The final day of the NCAA Championships comes Saturday with the final women's events. One Husky will be racing, as Sophie O'Sullivan takes on the women's 1,500-meter finals for the second year in a row. UW already has 14.5 points on the women's side from Thursday's pole vault.
